Last Wednesday evening someone clarified and put to words something that has been on my mind for awhile.
Life is busy. In American culture there’s any number of different things a person can do with their time and talents. If you’re talented in a given area most people would tell you should be utilizing that talent every opportunity you have.
That’s a lie.
The only thing you should be doing with your time and your talents is what God has called you to do with them, and I submit that the two look quite a bit different than many people would have you believe. Just because you are capable of doing something does not mean that you are called to do it. Here are two questions to ask yourself-
- Are you growing closer to God?
- If you’re married and have a kid or kids, are you spending enough time with them?
If you answered no to either one, then I suggest that something you’re spending time on is not a part of your calling.
I don’t have a simple answer for what to do about it yet, and likely never will. I know that I need to rearrange some priorities in my schedule and this past week I started on it. I have a ways to go yet, and as I reach milestones that are worth sharing I’ll share them up here.
